Lansurf SMO81

Product Category: Nonionics

Sorbitan Monooleate with 5 moles of Ethylene Oxide

INCI Name: Polysorbate 81

Quick Links

Lansurf SMO81 is a nonionic surfactant made by ethoxylating sorbitan monooleate with 5 moles of ethylene oxide, producing a versatile emulsifier known as Polysorbate 81. It appears as a clear amber liquid and is dispersible in water. This material can be used on its own or blended with complementary sorbitan esters such as Lansurf SMO to optimise emulsification performance. Typical applications include agrochemical formulations, anti‑fogging additives for plastic films, textile fibre lubricants and softeners, and secondary emulsifiers in both suspension and emulsion polymerisation systems.

Key Features

  • Nonionic emulsifier based on sorbitan monooleate ethoxylated with 5 moles of EO, providing balanced HLB properties ideal for a wide range of formulations.

  • Highly effective secondary emulsifier for suspension and emulsion polymerisation, and useful in applications such as agrochemical formulations, anti‑fog agents, and textile fibre lubricants/softeners.

  • Readily biodegradable, meaning it is not expected to persist in the environment and supports environmentally responsible formulation design.

Applications

Emulsifier in Industrial and Chemical Formulations
- Used as a primary emulsifier with strong wetting and defoaming properties in various industrial products.
- Functions as an excellent water‑in‑oil emulsifier, particularly in formulations requiring low foaming.

Lubricants & Metalworking
- Acts as a lubricant and processing additive in industrial formulations.
- Used in metalworking fluids due to its nonionic surfactant character.

Agriculture & Agrochemicals
- Used in agricultural formulations, including wettable powders, ECs, and other surfactant‑dependent systems.
- Also applied in agrochemical emulsions and dispersions.

Food & Food Processing
- Used in margarine and bakery applications as a food‑grade emulsifier.

Personal Care & Cosmetics
- Utilised as an emollient, stabiliser, and solubiliser in formulations such as creams, lotions, and hair products.
- Can act as an anti‑fogging agent in cosmetic packaging films.

Textile Industry
- Used as a textile fiber lubricant and softener.

Polymer & Plastics Processing
- Acts as a secondary emulsifier in suspension and emulsion polymerisation processes.

Coatings, Paper, Construction, and Other Industrial Uses
Included in broad industrial markets such as:
- Coatings additives
- Oil & gas production chemicals
- Textile auxiliaries
- Paper processing
- Mining chemicals
- Construction additives
